Hello, I'm Beth Carroll welcome to New Hampshire Outlook,.
It's about 3 weeks to the NH primary and the candidates are pulling out all the stops.
They're bringing in some big names to support their campaigns.
Celebrity endorsements have been a political tool for nearly 100 years.
How effective are they?
Outlook's Phil Vaughn set out on the campaign trail to see if these endorsements sway voters.

N1- It's that time of year.
Sound of crowd at endorsement event
N1b - When Primary candidates…
Sound at Clinton endorsement
N1c - Go looking for a bit of help.
Crowd sound at Obama/Oprah endorsement event
Fade to black
N2- This story begins at the Derryfield school in Manchester. At first blush it appears as though we've stumbled upon a Red Sox party. There are signs everywhere.
Series of quick shots -- Red Sox hats/jerseys etc
N3- Look further and you realize of course this is a McCain event - along with New England's favorite right-hander.
Shot of Schilling getting out of car and running into building
N4- On this night, Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling throws his support behind Senator John McCain. It's an All-Star endorsement for the Republican candidate from Arizona.
McCain 3535 - "I approached him."
Sound as Schilling/McCain walk on to stage
N5- In the crowd are undecided voters Brain and Sarah Sparhawk.
Sarah 440 - Phil "How far did you drive to get here? Sarah - About an hour and half."
N6- The Sparhawks are Red Sox fans and they love Curt Schilling. But it's the candidate they've come to see.
Sarah 444 - Phil "Would you have come to the event if Curt Schilling wasn't here? Sarah -Yes. I think so but it made it easier. Brian - It made it a lot easier to drag her husband here."
Sound of McCain/Schilling on stage
Stand up - Endorsements are as much a part of the NH Primary as town hall meetings. Nearly every candidate has one. Some are local politicians others are world-wide celebrities. In the end, however, what do endorsements really mean?
Dante 1635 - "Endorsements don't mean much to most voters."
N7- Endorsements usually have little meaning for candidates, as well, says political science professor Dante Scala.
Dante 1755 - "They are one day stories that get the candidate in the news."
N8- There are exceptions, however.
Dante 1640/1750 - "The rule of thumb in NH is that the seating governor's endorsement means quite a bit in the Primary. If the governor endorses a candidate it means there are a lot more feet on the ground which can help staff get out the vote."
N8- Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen endorsed then Vice President Al Gore in 2000. Governor Lynch - so far, he's on the sidelines. His wife, Dr. Susan Lynch, however, is not.
Sound from Lynch endorsing Clinton event
Dante 2425 - "Some people say that the governor's wife is somewhat of a proxy for his endorsement -- that's unclear. It's possible he will get in and if he does he will have an effect."
N9- And so might this woman.
Sound from Oprah event
N10- In two days, Oprah Winfrey appeared with Democratic Senator Barack Obama in three states - Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire.
More sound from event
Dante 1845 - "Oprah brings star power that no other endorser can touch. So with Oprah, Obama can fill the Verizon Center and get national attention not just NH attention. So it's great for getting attention for the candidate. Whether that means that people will go and vote for Obama because of Oprah - that's a different story."
N11 - Some polls show the African-American female vote tipping toward Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton. Senator Obama wants to change that.
Dante 2010 Phil - "Will the Oprah endorsement help? It doesn't hurt. It depends how much she appears in front of African-American audiences in places like S. Carolina. The down side with events with people like Oprah is that it gobbles up a lot of staff time. Imagine the number of employees it takes to work that type of event. Some people argue that's more trouble than it's worth because that's time staffers could be calling voters."
N12 - While it's true that an endorsement doesn't guarantee success, no candidate wants to be without one. Senator Chris Dodd has firefighters. Mayor Rudy Giuliani has State Troopers. And the coveted conservative endorsement of the Union Leader - that goes to Senator McCain.
Shot of Union Leader with McQuiad's name underneath headline
Dante 2100 - "Joe McQuiad is not going to fill the Verizon center with McCain but assuming the Union Leader will continue being aggressive with it's editorial stances, it might persuade some voters on the margin especially those conservative voters."
Sound at Schilling/McCain event
N13 - Back at the Derryfield school, the evening's event is winding down. Most of the questions from the audience went to the Senator. Perhaps it's an indication that NH voters really do want to focus on the candidates and not the celebrities that come along with them -- even if it is Curt Schilling.
Brian 338- "I think he's a good spokes person for McCain but McCain with his character doesn't need anyone to speak for him, he speaks clearly for himself."
Schilling 3500- "I want to help the right person get elected this time. I want to create awareness in places it may not be. The key is to get people to hear him. If there is a situation where I can help bring in front of him to hear him, I'll make that happen."
Shots of Oprah and Schilling
N14 - And perhaps that is the meaning of all this. Endorsements get people listening - not so much to the celebrities --- but to the candidates.
Brian 511 - "The presidential race this year is much bigger than the World Series or an autograph or a hello. Maybe we'll catch Curt in spring training."
N15 - For NH Outlook, I'm Phil Vaughn.

He's an accomplished businessman.who's perhaps best known for his role as CEO of the 2002 Winter Olympics where he took over amid a financial crisis.

I declare my intent to run for president of US…applause.:08
TRK1: When Mitt Romney entered the presidential race in February he portrayed himself as a political outsider.
NATS: 02 milling with crowd/ Havenwood tape
hi Roger… how are you.GOOD to meet you
TRK2: On the campaign trail he talks about most Americans not knowing anything about him.
13:08:29 so, if you go to state of Montana…what do you think of Mitt Romney…90% will Say WHO?
TRK3: Not so in NH, where Romney owns a home in Wolfeboro and was governor in the state next door.
NATS: FILING TAPE /13:33 Romney: How are you nice to see you.
TRK4: At 60, Romney is the same age his father was when HE ran for President.
SOT: FILING TAPE / ROMNEY 18:52-:59 I'm also thrilled to be sitting in the seat I imagine my father sat in 40 old years ago when he declared his candidacy.
TRK5: Former Michigan Governor George Romney sought the Republican nomination in 1968.
NATS: Filing Tape: Romney: 19:12-:16 and I intend to follow his footsteps …to a point…and the point is I plan on winning.
SOT: Interview Tape Beth Q 12:00:48 see any parallels with your dad?
Not so much parallels…learned a lot from dad.
12:01:03- he was my hero-I grew up with a dad who had remarkable strength of character and ability to get things done. 12:01:11
TRK6: Getting things done says Romney is in his DNA. He's a successful businessman, politician, and credited with rescuing the 2002 Olympics.
How does he define his candidacy?
SOT: Filing Tape: ROMNEY/ 20:03 / I am a fiscal conservative and also a foreign policy conservative …and I don't pretend to be the most conservative in every single issue - I'm not but the house that Reagan built is the right house for America …and for our party as we look forward to 08
TRK7: Courting the conservative base is key to winning the Republican Primary.
NATS: Romney campaign ads tape
TRK8: Romney's campaign ADS tout his family values message.
SOT: 12:01:37 Interview Tape Beth Q/ What do Nh voters not know about you…??
12:01:52 I'm defined more by my family they mean more to me…daughters in law and grandchildren than anything else in my life and yet most people don't see that 12:02:01
TRK9: But, at campaign stops Romney continues to get grilled on issues such as gay marriage.
SOT: LINCOLN TAPE:/ ROMNEY: 15:20: 30. I support equal right for gay people at same time I believe MARRIAGE is a relationship between a man and a woman.:41 ideal setting for raising a child 15:20:49
TRK10: Romney's reversal on ABORTION has been his biggest challenge.
SOT: You Tube Debate tape/ Romney: 5:18 I don't know how many times I could tell it. I was wrong. All right I was effectively pro choice when I ran for office. If people in this country are looking for someone who never made a mistake on a policy issue and is not willing to admit that they are wrong well then they are going to have to find someone else.
SOT: Interview tape: 12:055 why shouldn't voters question…Beth asks sincerity ques:
12:05:10- 12:05:19 people are welcomed to look at my sincerity of position. easy to do.gov next door for 4 years - you can look at my positions as Gov.
12:05:23 In politics your opponents are always trying to take a line or quote to see what he said there a gotcha game.but you can look at what I did
TRK11: On Immigration - Romney wants to cut funding for sanctuary cities, secure borders and eliminate special benefits for illegal aliens.
TRK12: But he's come under fire on the issue.
ROMNEY and Rudy / UTUBE DEBATE:
9:10 I would say he had sanctuary mansion.not just sanctuary city.
Romney" Mayor you know better than that.
9:29 Are you suggesting mr mayor, offensive suggesting if home owner hire company, here with funny accent, is that what you're suggesting.
TRK13: With the rhetoric heating up …is there a danger of a backlash?
SOT; Romney Inteview: 12:10:55 -:07 going negative where you attack your opponent on personal basis people find distasteful but going to a point where you describe differences in policy that you and opponent have is something people expect.
TRK18: Running on religious values has put Romney's Mormon faith under scrutiny.
SOT: Lincoln Tape:15:15:36:/QUESTION ** What role does Mormonism and God play in daily life and how affect you as president?
Romney? Probably plays important role prayer, thought and study and so forth 15:15: 48.
TRK15: Uncomfortable with questions on his Mormon beliefs - Romney was reluctant to talk about his faith. But, has since changed course.
NATS: Romney Speech: 8:25 I do not define my candidacy by my religion.
8:31 a person should not be elected or rejected because of his faith 8:34
TRK16: In a Dec 6th speech - Romney tried to put questions about his faith to rest.
SOT: 9:37-54 If I'm fortunate to become president, I will serve no religion, no one group no one cause and on one interest.a president must serve only thecommon cause of the people of the united states…applause.
TRK17: For many voters its the war in Iraq that continues to be the defining issue in the race.
SOT: Havenwood Tape/ Q: 12:41:20 What will you do quickly to end war in iraq:25
12:42:10/ I'd like to be able to bring our troops out as soon as I can but in a setting where the govt of iraq is able to maintain security maintain border, and not have it devolve into total chaos …:23 and massive civil war and potential involvement of other people in the neighborhood 12:42:29 ***
SOT: Interview Tape: Beth Q 11:59:15 what does end look like…involvement?
11:59:19 The key for our final work…… and friends.:29
11:58:57-:13/You're going to see troops coming home as iraq plays front line insurgent..
NATS: Romney Blog Tape: Questioner/1:30:06-:12 American friends research… war in Iraq.
1:30:24-:52 / 2.9 million dollars coming out of pockets of NH taxpayers every day.
Are you saying that money is more important than American lives? The cost in Iraq is blood. Don't make it money,
TRK18: Whether it's a testy exchange on the Iraq War, or sparring over health care Romney remains unruffled by hostile questions.
Nats: Lincoln Tape. Romney: 15:15:16-:20 socialized medicine with single-payer wrong way to go.private is rightway
TRK19: As Gov of MA, Romney's biggest achievement was the state's new health care program which he championed.
TRK20: The MA plan is being touted as a national model - But Romney opposes a one-size fits all approach. He's calling on states to create their own plan with federal support.
SOT: Lincoln Tape/ 15:14:47 tempting to say govt take it give it for free.if govt takes it.gives it to you free.paying for it in your taxes 15:15:05
SOT: Interview Tape/ BethQ: Why are you more electable than others?
12:09:37 the reason why I'm running… vote for me:48
12:09:53-:58 I think I could win NH …we lost it last time.I could win NH, Michigan.
12:10:17- I think the states that have been if you will purple states…fence sitting states going red or blue…are states I could win 12:10:25.-- because I think the rep base would support me - and I think indpendent voters would say Yeah you got skills and background that could keep america strong and make sure we're safe 12:10:35
TRK: Romney bills himself as experienced executive who can transform washington.
